on the topic of notifications, I have noticed that I don't always get a notification when there's new content in a watched thread, any idea why that might be?

Sometimes posts getting deleted can mess up notifications. You see this a lot on active threads, especially where people are constantly replying with posts that need to be deleted. Sometimes also if you're getting a lot of notifications some of them might get buried and the system won't always send a new notification until you clear the first one.
