So 20,000 characters is strickly enforced? Is there a way to see how many characters there are in a thread?

I get a message that I cannot post it because it is over 20,000 characters. I can only guess that 'characters' include letters, spaces and every punctuation. But nowhere do I get a count on how many characters are in my thread.

As far as I know there is no limit to the number of characters/posts in a thread, but there is a limit to how much can be in a single post. If you're posting a story that's over 20,000 characters you'll need to split it up into multiple posts. If you can't find a character count built into the site you should be able to paste your story into a site like Character Counter - WordCounter.net
