It's not getting reposted. The bump button just changes the timestamp of the latest post and bumps the thread.

Because the alternative is people making pointless posts that just say . or bump or alk;jdf;lkajd;lkj

We've tried it both ways and it definitely works better when you're not sending out a reply notification to everybody and burying the actual posts under a bunch of garbage.

i wasn't questioning why the bump button is a feature, i was questioning why the bump button modifies the timestamp on the latest post of a thread. is there no other way to push a thread to the latest threads without modifying posts?

I dunno. I imagine it's just a simpler way to sort stuff. I suppose whoever wrote the forum software could create an entire different invisible timestamp value used for sorting the threads, but it seems needlessly complex on sites that are already hitting servers pretty hard for all the visible stuff. It's all just academic anyway. Almost every forum on the web uses premade software that just has different settings selected or small modifications. You're not going to see free sites like this employing full time tech people to write and modify and update software.
